MIT Offers Free Tuition to Families Earning Under $200,000.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has launched a transformative initiative aimed at making its prestigious education more accessible.
Families earning less than $200,000 annually are now eligible for free tuition, while those earning under $100,000 will pay nothing for tuition, housing, dining, and associated costs.
This policy is part of MIT’s broader commitment to reducing financial barriers for talented students. Currently, 80% of American households meet the income threshold, and 50% earn below $100,000, making this opportunity widely available.
“MIT’s education model—intense and rooted in science and engineering—offers immense value to students and society,” said MIT President Sally Kornbluth.
“We’re determined to ensure cost doesn’t deter the most talented minds from joining us.”
This initiative places MIT among a growing number of U.S. universities tackling the rising cost of higher education.
For instance, the University of Texas will eliminate tuition for families earning under $100,000 starting next year, and Harvard’s tuition waiver for families earning less than $85,000 has been in place since 2004.
The program reflects MIT’s mission to foster innovation and empower students from diverse financial backgrounds, ensuring that the next generation of leaders has access to world-class education without financial constraints.
